While this shaver has been around since 2010 there is a reason that it is still the electric shaver with the highest sales numbers of all time. Built by the well-known and respected German company Braun the 790cc model is part of their most popular series 7. Despite it having been first launched 6 years ago it is still the best shaver on the market today, and earns the No. 1 spot on our list.
The Braun Series 7 790cc excels above all others on our list when it comes to providing an incredibly close, smooth shave. The features it comes equipped with also make it stand out above other shavers. There are 3 trimmers on this model; two OptiFoil trimmers with one ActiveLift trimmer between. The OptiFoil trimmers provide the close, smooth finish the shaver is renowned for, while the ActiveLift trimmer lifts and cuts the short hairs lying flat on the surface of the skin in more difficult areas like the neck and chin.
The Pulsonic design produces up to 10,000 micro-vibrations per minute, increasing power when shaving difficult or heavier bearded areas. The flexible pivoting head navigates the contours of the face with precision without the need to apply increased pressure.
The shaver can be set to your personal preference by selecting one of the 3 personalization options: normal, intensive or extra sensitive. The 790cc’s pop-up trimmer is ideal for trimming sideburns,
The Cleaning and Charging Dock (included) is a one-stop care solution. It thoroughly cleans, dries, lubricates and charges the shaver so it’s ready to go again, all with the touch of a single button.
The one disappointing aspect of this model is that it is not a Wet / Dry shaver, but for those who need this feature the Braun Series 7 799cc model does have the Wet and Dry technology but comes with a heftier price tag.
The Braun Series 7 790cc electric shaver truly is the best shaver on the market in 2017. It is a quality built shaver that provides an exceptionally close shave and the pivoting head with 3 trimmers, 3 levels of personalization and the cleaning and charging dock make this an excellent buy.
Surprisingly, given all of its features, the 790cc is also one of the most budget-friendly models on the market and is in fact priced considerably lower than the others we selected for this list.
Braun’s most recently launched model of electric shavers is the 9095cc equipped with Wet&Dry Technology. Very similar to the 790cc model mentioned above with only two noticeable differences; the addition of the Direct & Cut trimmer designed to cut hairs that grow in various directions. It does this by aligning the hairs. The second difference is the replacement of the 790cc’s ActiveLift trimmer with the HyperLift trimmer which is slightly better equipped to catch and cut flat-lying hairs.
The Braun 9095cc’s Syncrosonic technology is capable of delivering 40,000 cross-cutting actions every minute but this should not be confused with the 10,000 micro-vibrations of the 790cc model. The 9095cc produces a slightly closer shave than the 790cc model but not significant enough to be particularly noticeable. Just as with the 790cc this model also has the pop-up trimmer for mustache, beard and sideburns.
We placed this shaver at No. 2 simply because unlike the 790cc this model is all plastic, even though it is covered with an attractive chrome-look finish. We also felt that given its much higher price tag this shaver may have more features than a man who only needs to shave once a day needs. It is however a little bit more comfortable on the skin.
The major advantage the Braun Series 9 9095cc has over the 790cc is the addition of Wet&Dry technology, allowing it to be used with shaving gel for more sensitive skin, or as a regular dry skin shaver.
In summary, the Braun 9095cc is equipped with the same desirable features of the 790cc but has the advantage of the Wet&Dry technology. It also has the additional trimmer that aligns and cuts hairs that grow in various directions. On the down side though, this shaver is very expensive, particularly when you consider that it is all plastic.
- Lower quality build consisting of all plastic.
- High price tag at twice that of the 790cc.
For superior close shaving the Panasonic Arc 5 wins hands down. If you have been considering going back to blade razors because your electric shaver is just not cutting it anymore, we suggest you consider this shaver first.
The Japanese-designed and built Panasonic Arc5 is a foil shaver that contains 5 blades, enabling it to provide an extremely close shave. Best suited to those who have heavy, thick beards, the Arc5 comes equipped with a 14,000 cycle per minute motor designed to eliminate the pulling and tugging often experienced with cheaper shavers.
The Panasonic Arc5 comes with a cleaning and charging dock and features
The shaving head’s 5 hypo-allergenic foils are made up of 3 types, as follows:
· Three slit foils for cutting long, thick hairs
· One Lift-Tech trimmer for cutting flat-lying hairs
· One finishing foil for cutting hairs growing in various directions that the other 4 trimmers didn’t cut
While there is a lot to like about this shaver it may not be as comfortable as other shavers to use. The shaver’s head seems a little bulky, which may make shaving of the neck a little more difficult. Unless you have a thick beard and your current shaver is not providing a close enough shave then we recommend that instead of the Panasonic Arc5 you consider the Arc4 (see below).
This shaver definitely has superior performance and we feel it is the best shaver Panasonic has produced, however the lack of comfort could be disappointing to some. This is of course a matter of personal opinion and you may find it to be just fine.
- Not ideal for sensitive skin.
- Lacking a little in comfort.
Master of the Rotary shaver, Philips has cornered the market on this technology, and the Norelco Sensotouch 3D is proof. Coming in at No. 4 on our list, this shaver is good for providing a close shave on both beards and heads.
We found this rotary shaver to be comfortable to hold and use, and its 3 round foil pivoting head adjusts smoothly to the contours of the face or head to catch and cut all stubble and hair, providing a good close shave. Ideal for bald headed men, the Sensotouch’s unique GyroFlex 3D head features
This electric shaver is not short on other features either. It too is equipped with the ability to catch and cut hairs those hard to get flat-lying hairs, only in this model it is called Lift&Cut.
As with the previous shavers, the Sensotouch 3D has some disappointing points too. While this shaver has a quality appearance it actually feels cheap, mainly because it is made of rubber and plastic. Perhaps the biggest downside to this shaver is that the battery is not replaceable so if it
Overall the Sensotouch 3D is a very good rotary shaver with all the advanced features you would expect from Philips. It’s quick, powerful, comfortable, and provides a close shave, but the
- Low quality
buildof rubber and plastic.
- Replacement parts are expensive which is of serious concern.
- Battery cannot be replaced.
- Charges only via dock.
Similar to the Arc5, the Panasonic Arc4 does not come with a charging dock and has only 4 blades instead of the 5 the Arc5 has. This Panasonic model is also capable of providing a very close shave but where it lacks compared to other shavers is in comfort.
While the Arc4 does not have the cleaning and charging
- Lacking a little in comfort.
- Cleaning and charging dock not included, hence the low price.
An American brand, Wahl is the brand many professional barbers choose. The Wahl Professional 8061 comes with an affordable price tag, and performs to the satisfaction of most men. Equipped with the Dynaflex Cutting system, the 8061 tackles the more difficult jaw line and neck areas with ease.
The Professional 8061 features a flexible head equipped with hypoallergenic, anti-microbial
Well designed, this model is easy to use and comes equipped with a pop-up trimmer for sideburns and
We noticed that this shaver seems to vibrate a lot when it’s turned on which might make it somewhat uncomfortable for some men to use.
One thing that must be pointed out about this shaver is that it is a finishing shaver suited to those who shave daily and only have stubble length hair to contend with. For men with longer
In summary, the Wahl Professional 8061’s hypoallergenic heads are a huge plus for men with sensitive skin. It does have a good long battery life, which is a definite advantage when traveling. It’s easy to use and just as importantly easy to clean. The 8061 represents great value for money.
- Gets hot in just a few minutes.
- Vibrates quite a bit.
- Lacking in comfort.
- Limited to stubble length hairs.
Like the Braun Series 7 790CC the AT830 has been around for a while and yet is still selling strong. First released onto the market back in 2012 this shaver is a good choice for those who may be looking for a budget-friendly model in the rotary shaver line.
The Philips Norelco AT830 comes packed with plenty of great features including being a Wet and Dry electric shaver. While the head is limited in the amount of pivot it is capable of, the DualPrecision technology of the AT830 tackles long hairs and short stubble equally well to provide a comfortable, close shave.
Very little pressure is required to achieve a great shave, leaving you with smooth, bump-free skin. Comes with a pop-up trimmer, just like the previously listed shavers. The AT830 takes only 60 minutes to become fully charged and the charge lasts for up to 50 minutes, enough to shave 10 times on one charge.
In summary, the Philips Norelco AT830 is considered a mid-level shaver but still has many great features such as the Wet/Dry and DualPrecision technologies, long-life battery, pop-up trimmer and pivoting head. This model is also extremely well-priced compared to many others on the market. Very quiet, the AT830 looks attractive, is easy to clean and is an
- Head pivot is limited.
Another Braun model, the CoolTec is a Wet&Dry electric shaver that is great for men with sensitive skin. Its Thermo Electric Cooling (TEC) technology is designed to keep sensitive skin cool during shaving to help avoid redness,
The Wet&Dry feature of the Braun CoolTec is 100% waterproof so it can be rinsed clean in water and can be used in the shower. It is also able to be used on dry skin.
The SensoBlade technology Braun built
We feel that we cannot recommend using the CoolTec cooling function with foams or gels, but other than that this is a great shaver with good design and comfort. Compared to many other shavers on this list the price is very attractive. We did feel though that the battery life is a little short, particularly when using the cooling function, but the cooling feature is what makes it a great choice for men with sensitive skin.
- Cooling feature drains battery quickly.
Famous for pioneering the cordless, rechargeable electric shaver, Remington is well-known for their entry to mid-level electric shaver range and is certainly deserving of a place on our list.
The Remington F5-5800 features a pivoting head which contains 2 foils and a trimmer, designed to provide a comfortable, easy shaving experience. Simple to clean, the F5-5800 has a removable head which can be rinsed under water. While we found this model to provide a shave free of any irritation it does not provide the close shave many of
Given its low price it’s not surprising that it is made of cheap plastic. The blades last an average of 3 – 4 months so while you save on the initial cost of the shaver you will be buying blades at least 3 to 4 times a year. The motor is quite noisy too.
The Remington F5-5800 is an entry level shaver at an
- Cheap plastic construction.
- Doesn’t deliver a close shave.
- Blades need replaced quite often.
One of the things that Panasonic excel at no matter what they price tag is designing electric shavers that provide a close shave. The Arc3’s very low price tag may surprise you when you experience the close shave the 3 blade system produces. It comes equipped with a pivoting head, Wet&Dry technology and LED display that lets you know when the battery charge is getting low. Priced at less than $70 you would expect this shaver to cost more.
The Panasonic Arc3 does not come with a cleaning and charging dock, which is why it can be priced so low compared to the models that do. The 3 nanotech blades in the head are hypoallergenic, making it ideal for those with sensitive skin. The head pivots and adjusts well to the contours of the face to provide a smooth skin shave.
Our overall impression of the Panasonic Arc3 is that it provides a surprisingly good list of features at an affordable price, and even though it does not have a cleaning and charging dock included in the package, cleaning the Arc3 is very simple. The battery life is good and because it is a Wet&Dry shaver it can be used both in the shower and with or without gel or foam.
- A little irritating to the skin.
- No cleaning and charging dock included.
Buyers Guide to Electric Shavers
The electric shavers of today combine the latest technologies into a powerful little package. Whether you ultimately choose a shaver featured on our list or elsewhere we recommend reading through this Buyers Guide to understand what today’s technological advances offer in the way of shaving experience and comfort.
Rotary or Foil
Rotary shavers were initially designed to provide a more comfortable shaving experience for the head. Rotary shavers are definitely more comfortable to use but they don’t provide the close shave that most men like to get.
Foil shavers on the other hand are excellent to providing a close shave due to them being equipped with very sharp blades.
· LED Display – Designed to let you know when the battery charge is running low.
· Corded / Cordless – Very few shavers can be used while being plugged in, although the Braun Series 7 does.
· Easy to clean, easy to use – It is important that the electric shaver you choose is easy to clean and use, particularly if it doesn’t come with a cleaning and charging dock. The electric shavers listed above are all easy to clean and many come with a charging and cleaning dock. While some require manual cleaning they are simple and quick to rinse.
· Pop-up trimmer – Most of the shavers on our list come equipped with a trimmer for grooming mustache, beards and sideburns.
· Wet and Dry technology – This style of electric shaver can be used both on dry skin and in the shower with gels and foams. These are a good option for those with sensitive skin.
